Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does new plaster take to dry before I can paint?

Drying times depend entirely on the type of work completed:

  • Skim coat only (2-3mm): typically 3 to 5 days to dry completely.
  • Backing coat + skim (bonding plaster or sand & cement): anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks to dry thoroughly from the background out.
  • The visual test: wait for the entire surface to change to a completely uniform, light pink colour before painting.
  • Drying tip: keep mild background ventilation (a window slightly on the latch) with your heating at a low, consistent temperature. Avoid blasting high heat, as drying plaster too quickly can cause shrinkage cracks.
How do you manage dust and protect my home during the project?

Keeping your property immaculate is a core part of our service. Our protection and dust-management protocol involves:

  • Room preparation: we advise rooms are cleared of furniture and personal items before work starts to eliminate any risk of accidental damage.
  • Surface protection: all floor coverings protected with heavy-duty materials, remaining surfaces shielded with specialist trade sheeting and drop-film.
  • Advanced dust extraction: a professional Mirka M-Class dust extractor captures particles at the source during sanding and cleanup.
  • Zoned containment: for intensive tasks we use magnetic door protectors to seal the workspace, plus ducted ventilation fans and an active HEPA air purifier to keep the rest of your home clean and breathable.
Can you plaster straight over old, textured Artex ceilings?

Yes, it is possible to plaster directly over Artex, but this is a purely cosmetic approach. Before deciding, we assess the property age, potential asbestos risk and structural condition:

  • The direct skim (cosmetic): skimming directly only hides the texture. Hidden issues such as old distemper coatings, nailed plasterboard joints or unstable lath and plaster remain unaddressed, and the weight of new plaster can cause them to fail later.
  • Our standard recommendation: in most cases we over-board the ceiling with new plasterboard mechanically fixed into the timber joists before skimming. This covers the old finish without disturbing it, anchors to the structural frame and ensures a flat, long-lasting finish.
Do you provide free, written estimates and how does your pricing work?

We provide fully itemised, written estimates following a physical site inspection. Our policy on fees is transparent:

  • Standard inquiries: estimates for properties you currently own are provided free, with no obligation.
  • Pre-purchase & insurance inquiries: if you do not yet own the property, or require an estimate for insurance purposes, we provide a comprehensive breakdown for a fixed fee. This fee is fully deducted from your final invoice if we are contracted to carry out the works in full.
Are you fully insured and what happens if something is accidentally damaged?

We carry comprehensive Public Liability and Employers Liability Insurance tailored for plastering and general building works. While our strict site protection and room-clearing protocols are designed to prevent any incidents, our insurance ensures total legal compliance and complete peace of mind for your property throughout the duration of the project.

Do I need to remove radiators, skirting boards or fixtures before you arrive?

To protect your belongings and ensure the highest quality results, we request the following:

  • Furniture & fixtures: rooms should ideally be cleared of furniture, curtains and wall-mounted fixtures before work begins. Let us know if you need a hand moving heavy items.
  • Radiators: for a quality finish behind radiators we recommend removing them first. We work with a qualified plumber who can do this for you if required.
  • Skirting boards: for the best finish we recommend skirting is removed and replaced after plastering, depending on the works and the condition of the boards. We have a carpenter who can carry out the reinstatement.
How do you handle site waste and external logistics like scaffolding and window protection?

We manage our projects end-to-end to minimise disruption:

  • Waste management: we offer a licensed waste removal service if required. All debris is sorted on-site and cleared to a certified recycling transfer station for fully legal, responsible disposal.
  • Scaffolding & protection: for external rendering or high-access works we manage and coordinate certified scaffolding hire on your behalf, and handle all external pre-work masking so your doors, windows and downpipes are fully protected before any work begins.
